Maikos, Japan

友人こんにちは

This is the first car that Kana from Japan ever sent! I feel so honored! Thank you very much for this extraordinary card Kana! I love it!

Maiko is an apprentice geiko (not exactly same as geisha) in Kyoto, western Japan. Their jobs consist of performing songs, dances, and playing the shamisen or Koto (Traditional Japanese musical instruments) for visitors during feasts. Maiko are usually aged 15 to 20 years old and become geiko after learning how to dance the traditional kyomai dances, play the shamisen, and learning Kyō-kotoba (dialect of Kyoto), regardless of their origin.

Have you read the book “Memories of a Geisha” by Arthur Golden? I think the book illustrates quite well what Maikos and Geishas do. There is also a movie, in case you don’t like to read so much 🙂

I send love!
